Google Stated Internal Anchor Text and Ranking Effects

Anchor text is an important part of SEO that is usually used as a phrase. If you use it correctly in your content, it increases your content quality further. But with the wrong use, your organic search traffic may go down in overnight or Google can penalize your blog.

Internal anchor text provides relevant information about content to both search engines and users. Here I am going to share if we make changes to the old Internal Anchor Text, How does it impact your site. Or it has any downside?

Google’s Webmaster Trends Analyst John Mueller has discussed in one of his videos about Internal Anchor Text and Ranking Effects.

So let’s know what they stated…

  • Does changing internal anchor text hurt the ranking?
      • Updated Internal Anchor Text Helps in Ranking
      • Here’s what John Mueller said for the Images

Does changing internal anchor text hurt the ranking?

There are many web publishers who search when we update old internal linking, it has any downside? Can it affect ranking?

Does changing the text of older internal links to help users understand them have any downside? Can it hurt the rankings?

John Mueller (Webmaster Trends Analyst at Google) says that

No. That sounds perfect. If you’re updating anchor text internally to make it more easily understandable by users then usually that also helps search engines to better understand the context of those pages. So I would definitely go for that.

…if you are just changing the text like the writing and you’re changing the anchor from one text name to something else, that’s perfectly fine.

Updated Internal Anchor Text Helps in Ranking

John Mueller did not say that updating the old internal links would improve your ranking. It only helps to better understand the search engine for context pages.

In the olden days, the internal anchor text was considered a ranking factor, but no longer.

Here’s what John Mueller said for the Images

The one thing I would avoid doing is changing anchor text into an image. So if you have… a fancy font or something that you want to use on your pages and you change a link from being a text link to an image link and you don’t have any textual kind of connection with that image for that link then it’s really hard for us to understand what the anchor text is supposed to be.
